Measure of love

September 30th, 2010 by Maureen

And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. Eph 3:18

Any direction we go, God’s love reaches us. However we may try to measure His love, the answer is always “infinite.” We can put away our rulers, He loves us…and them.

Lord, thanks for Your love.

Right back at ya

September 29th, 2010 by Maureen

Then, by the will of God, I will be able to come to you with a joyful heart, and we will be an encouragement to each other. Rom 15:32

We are meant to give one another courage in fearful times, to inspire each other when everyone is tired, and to bring joy when the mood is bleak. God gave us one another to give and receive encouragement.

Lord, help me to speak encouraging words today.

Cool and breezy

September 28th, 2010 by Maureen

They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit. Jer. 17:8

God’s presence is like a spiritual cool front that blows in when our lives seem to be experiencing record drought and heat. He nourishes and refreshes us. He produces an environment of blessing through us and for us.

Lord, thank you for spiritual and physical breezes.

A law of spiritual geometry

September 27th, 2010 by Maureen

I pondered the direction of my life, and I turned to follow your laws. Ps. 119:59

Small decisions, just a few degrees off course, don’t seem like a big deal, but the laws of geometry apply spiritually: 1) Angling away from Christ’s path  will create an ever increasing distance between us and those on the path.  2) The longer we travel away the greater the journey to get back to the path.

Lord, help me stay on the path.

Careless in the care of God

September 26th, 2010 by Maureen

Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds. Matt 6:26 (Message)

Change can feel like all the ground has come out from underneath because there is no predictable future to step into. Because God is so big and cares so much about each one of us, we really can be careless in his care. “What’s next” is where it’s always been: in God’s hands.

Lord, when I can’t feel the ground underneath me, help me to fly.

The truth is out there

September 25th, 2010 by Maureen

Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight… ask for understanding. Prov. 2:2-3

God can speak from unlikely sources if we pay attention.  A casual conversation can yield an “aha” moment of insight. When a phrase in a song or  story, a moment of reflection outside, or a photo in the paper impacts us in an unexpected way, it might be an avenue that God is using to reveal something He wants us to know.

Lord, help me to recognize your truth from whatever source You choose to use.

Now, however, it is time to forgive and comfort him. Otherwise he may be overcome by discouragement. 2 Cor 2:7

When we mess up we usually have to face some consequences and deal with disapproval and disappointment. Christ doesn’t abandon us when we fail but offers us restoration. As believers we also contribute to an environment where people who mess up can recover.

Lord, help me to apply appropriate discipline and magnanimous grace.

Peace out

September 23rd, 2010 by Maureen

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you his peace at all times and in every situation. The Lord be with you all. 2 Thess. 3:16

Peace is available no matter what is happening in our lives. Our circumstances reflect the imperfection of the world rather than the measure of God’s care. He is always with us and always for us.

Lord, thank you for bringing peace to my chaos.

For the win

September 22nd, 2010 by Maureen

I thank you for answering my prayer and giving me victory!  Psalms 118:21

Some life experiences can feel as if we’re fighting our way through an unwinnable battle. When we feel overwhelmed and afraid, God hears our prayers. When we feel beaten and trapped, God helps us find strength and wisdom.

Lord, thanks for the win.

Listening devices

September 21st, 2010 by Maureen

You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. James 1:19b

Communicate and commune have the same root word: common. Finding common ground increases the chance of consensus and reduces the chance of conflict. So take a breath, listen calmly, repeat it back, be objective, sleep on it, stop feeling threatened, and listen.

Lord, help me really hear before I speak.

Hometown heroes

September 20th, 2010 by Maureen

Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.” Mark 6:4

Often the people who are closest to us are the ones who are least likely to embrace change in our lives. Whatever rocks our worlds is going to disturb their comfort zones as well. Imagine the awkward conversations that occurred when the disciples told their friends and relatives that they were quitting their jobs to follow Jesus.

Lord, use me to bless my family and friends.

Love as change agent

September 19th, 2010 by Maureen

This is my command: Love each other. Jn 5:17

The love of Christ is the tipping point that alters the future one soul at a time. Love is the glue that makes the truth we speak to one another stick. Love alters the environment of a room, a neighborhood, or a nation.

Lord, I want to participate in the impact of Your love.

If Hope Floats, Grace Stretches

September 18th, 2010 by Maureen

Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Eph.4:2

As long as we live on this earth somewhere, somebody who really loves God is messing up. Imperfection means we need forgiveness and/or need to forgive pretty regularly. God’s mercy is big enough to stretch over the most epic fail.

Lord, help me to receive Your grace and to extend it to others.

Viral unselfishness

September 17th, 2010 by Maureen

The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed. Prov. 11:25

There is no reason to hoard our resources or fear we’ll run out. When we respond to the needs of others, God, in His abundance, will make sure that we have what we need. Unselfishness contributes to a generous, refreshing environment where everyone’s needs are met.

Lord, refresh someone else through me today.

Trust God

September 16th, 2010 by Maureen

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Rom 15:13

Trust protects us from a continual state of insecurity and anxiety.  None of us can process all the information or make all the decisions that affect our daily lives. We live more joyfully, effectively, and confidently when we choose to trust God to influence the details that are out of our contol.

Lord, I trust You.

Spiritual dialysis

September 15th, 2010 by Maureen

How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. Ps. 19:12

The process of dialysis involves removing all the blood from the body, cleansing it, and putting it back in. It is exhausting and time-consuming and requires commitment. Opening our deepest thoughts and desires to God for cleansing might be grueling but the results bring spiritual health.

Lord, cleanse and restore me.

Don’t be bitter

September 14th, 2010 by Maureen

Look after each other so that none of you fails to receive the grace of God. Watch out that no poisonous root of bitterness grows up to trouble you, corrupting many. Heb. 12:15

Even when we are justified in taking offense the results can be destructive. We take care of one another best when we extend the benefit of the doubt to one another. As followers of Christ we are charged with contributing to an environment where grace and reconciliation can thrive.

Lord, weed out all the bitterness from my life.

In awe of God

September 13th, 2010 by Maureen

God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end. Ecc. 3:11

There are mornings when it seems as though God has created a new shade of orange for the sun. There are times when the impact of ocean waves confirms God’s power. Our hearts were designed to experience awe, and nature is a only a glimpse into the awesome experience of actually knowing Him.

Lord, I am awed by all You have made, all that You’ve shown me of Yourself, and all You have yet to reveal.
