How can I help?

March 11th, 2011 by Maureen

Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. Gal. 6:2

Sharing burdens cannot always be a scheduled service event.  It’s recognizing that everyone who is in pain needs to know that they are loved, that they are not alone, that they matter, that there is hope and choosing to be there for them. Sharing burdens means helping when it’s uncomfortable and showing up when it’s inconvenient.

Lord, today show me the best way to carry your compassion to the broken and devastated.

Opting out of my mind

March 10th, 2011 by Maureen

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Rom. 12:2

In a culture that defines success in terms of personal autonomy giving up our options and depending on God to call the shots is a huge paradigm shift. Yet people who have all the options that go with wealth and power are often thoe ones who self destruct. We are not designed to operate as independent entitities but as children in God’s household and members of His body.

Lord, I’m opting to let you change my mind.

Replacement parts

March 9th, 2011 by Maureen

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Gal. 5:22-23

It’s good to repent and to stop doing the things that hurt other people, ourselves, and Jesus but what about that thing  inside us that make us still want to do those things? The fruit of the Spirit are replacement parts for hate, pride, misery, anger, greed, unfaithfulness, ungraciousness, and self-indulgence. Real spiritual change happens when we allow God to replace our impulses with His own.

Lord, change my heart.

Life is good…even when it’s not

March 8th, 2011 by Maureen

Yet what we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will reveal to us later. Rom. 8:18

On a global and historical scale the trivia we consider suffering often boils down to inconvenience. Even real suffering is bearable because His loving presence is always with us, and it’s temporary because His redemption comes with a really sweet eternal life.  If we add to that  all the people who love us, the opportunities we  have, and the moments of true beauty, joy, and peace that He gives us in this world, comparatively speaking, no matter what happens, life is good.

Lord, you are good all the time and I praise you.

Prayer for the frustrated

March 7th, 2011 by Maureen

Pray that the Lord your God will show us what to do and where to go. Jer. 42:3

This is the prayer we pray when we have no idea what to do next. God really does know the way through everything we face. Too often we have to reach the point of complete frustration before we are willing to let go of what we think is security and throw our yielded hands into the air.

 OK, Lord, what now?

Reality check

March 6th, 2011 by Maureen

And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus. Phil. 4:19

Our loving God knows everything that each of us needs and has infinite resources from which to supply those needs. The Eternal God who created the universe and came up with a plan to redeem our very souls is certainly capable and equipped to supply any other needs that might arise in our lives. Could one of our needs be a reality check on how we define “need” and “riches”?

Lord, give me a more realistic view of my needs.

Declaring myself as a dependent

March 5th, 2011 by Maureen

If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for all the world is mine and everything in it. Ps. 50:12

We have no bargaining power with God because He doesn’t need anything from us; He already owns everything, including the resources we claim as our own. Love and mercy are our only currency and God had to supply that as well because we are His dependents. Praise and gratitude are the appropriate responses to God’s grace and provision in our lives.

Beautiful Lord, You know my needs, You supply my needs, I am grateful.

Soldier on, my friends

March 4th, 2011 by Maureen

This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Jos. 1:9

Fear and discouragement can be paralyzing and render us ineffective. God is right there with us in hard circumstances and hostile environments. Sometimes we  just have to proceed based on the assurance of His presence and the importance of our mission even when we don’t feel particularly strong or courageous.

Lord, help me to soldier on.

It’s not about me…it’s really not

March 3rd, 2011 by Maureen

regard one another as more important than yourselves; Phil 2:3b (NAS)

It is natural to be self-focused so we sometimes have to remind ourselves that the people around us have families and ideas and hopes that mean as much to them as ours do to us. Sometimes we have to go a step further and put their agendas above our own. No one is more important all the time but love and humility helps us to give priority to others when it is appropriate.

Lord, help me to remember that it’s not about me.

Travel light

March 2nd, 2011 by Maureen

let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.  Heb. 12:1b

Some of us are hoarders and don’t like to throw anything away. Dealing with all this extra baggage, whether it’s physical or emotional, diverts our attention away from what’s really important and weighs us down. It’s time to let it go and travel light through this life.

Lord, help me to recognize what’s weighing  me down and give me the strength to get rid of it.

Evidence of miracles

March 1st, 2011 by Maureen

But if I do his work, believe in the evidence of the miraculous works I have done, even if you don’t believe me. Then you will know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father. Jn. 10:38

Jesus understood that his life presented evidence to support his words. The choice to love and serve because we love Christ and others provides loud evidence that Christ is at work  in our lives. We participate in the miraculous through every change and every hope that Christ provides through us.

Lord, use my life to present evidence of your love and grace.
