[The Magi] bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Matt. 2:11

Traditionally the gold indicates Jesus’ kingship, frankincense acknowledges His priesthood, and myrrh prefigures His death. In ancient times these were not only gifts for kings, but offerings to gods. Scholars believe that the third century B.C.E. king Seleucus II Callinicus offered these three gifts to the god Apollo. As worshippers of the one true God, we open our chests and offer up our hearts to Jesus our Priest and King.

Lord, I bow down and worship.
