Does Jesus really hinge our forgiveness on our capacity to forgive?

And forgive our sins [trespasses, debts] as we have forgiven those who sin against us. Matt. 6:12

Only as a recipient of unmerited, unreserved grace do we have it in us to extend forgiveness the way Jesus does – without bringing it up later, holding a grudge, extracting penance, and/or distancing ourselves. Some of us have trouble forgiving because we ourselves are guilt-ridden and haven’t forgiven ourselves. And some, in our pride, don’t really believe we need forgiving. If the currency of forgiveness is not the cross – total, complete, and restorative – we are all screwed.

Lord, let me live and breathe Your grace.
