What kind of verb is “remain?”

When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love…This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. Jn 15:9-12

When we try to visualize “obey,” “remain,” and “love” as verbs can get hung up in how the action is supposed to look. Love is not simply the intent; it is the result, the response, the reality of God’s presence. Love is the DNA structure, the building blocks of life, and the atmosphere of spiritual existence. Inhale, remain – exhale, obey. Conscious or unconscious? Action or being? Maybe love is all those things.

Lord, show me how to respond to love.
