Depends on who’s telling the story

The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger. Luke 2:11-12

Jesus didn’t fit the Savior model the Jews were expecting. Their Messiah story called for a king, a warrior,  a superhero, or a recognizable deity who would change their earthly circumstances. Instead they got a baby in a manger. Some adjusted to the story He was telling, but others recast Him as villain, reinterpreted His message, or turned Him into a metaphor.

Lord, thank You for the manager, the cross, the empty tomb, and the rest of the story You are telling.
