It’s okay to ask questions

April 26th, 2016 by Maureen

Think about what I am saying. The Lord will help you understand all these things. 2 Tim. 2:7

Some ideas take thought. It may take some time, study, questioning and prayer before some of the truths we seek to understand sink into our heads. We should seek an environment in which questioning is welcomed. Freedom to ask questions allows for deeper exploration of ideas, meaningful dialog, and integration of abstract ideas into genuine belief and real life. We should not be afraid to ask questions. Questions should not be seen as confrontations or challenges, but as opportunities to discover more about the God we love, the God who wants to be known. We should never be afraid to say “I don’t know.” And, if we want to open ourselves to even more exciting experiences in Christ and with others, we can also respond: “let’s explore this idea together.”

Lord, I’m digging, help me understand.

Fan the flames

February 16th, 2013 by Maureen

This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. 2 Tim. 6-7

We can’t be afraid of being who God has made us. We can’t be afraid of using those gifts that God has gifted to each of us. Our gifts are not our own but meant to be used to ignite passion, blessing and  encouragement in His kingdom.

Lord, even my gifts are not about me. Help me to use them fearlessly for You.

Following the pattern

September 4th, 2012 by Maureen

Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me—a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. 2 Tim. 1:13

Our repeated thought patterns, habitual behavior, and the desires that motivate them create patterns in our lives. Belief in Christ does not make us immune from falling into patterns driven by fear, anger, or greed. Following His pattern helps redirect our natural patterns in a more spiritually wholesome direction.

Lord, show me how to be motivated by Your love instead of my fears and desires and how to think and act from that motivation.

Conversation starters

March 30th, 2012 by Maureen

May God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord give you grace, mercy, and peace. 1 Tim. 1:2 & 2 Tim 1:2

This is how Paul began both letters to Timothy, who Paul considered his “son in the faith.” Grace, mercy, and peace support and motivate everything else Paul has to say to Timothy. More conversations should begin with mutual prayers for grace, mercy, and peace.

Lord, help me begin what I have to say with grace, mercy and peace.

All things considered

February 8th, 2012 by Maureen

Think about what I am saying. The Lord will help you understand all these things. 2 Tim. 2:7

If we seek to know God deeply we need to be brave enough to ask “What is true?” not “How can I prove I’m right?”  We need to be honest enough to seek Him with fully engaged hearts and minds. Thinking, analyzing, and questioning are not threats to faith. Faith has its’ basis in the pursuit of truth and the truth should stand up to scrutiny.

Lord, help me seek truth fearlessly. Give me clarity and understanding.

Jesus is a Mythbuster

February 1st, 2012 by Maureen

They will reject the truth and chase after myths. But you should keep a clear mind in every situation. 2 Tim 3:4-5a

There are lots of appealing myths out there. Some things we believe because they allow us to skirt responsibility. Some things we believe because we don’t fully accept that grace cannot be deserved. Some things are just fascinating, distracting, or comforting when reality requires too much emotional investment. Christ offers clarity.

Lord, bust my myths and help me fully engage in the abundance of a life lived in Spirit and in truth.

Be like Jesus

January 1st, 2012 by Maureen

But you, Timothy, certainly know what I teach, and how I live, and what my purpose in life is. You know my faith, my patience, my love, and my endurance. 2 Tim. 3:14

Faith, patience, love, endurance, purpose, and truth. It’s a great way to be known. If I strive for anything this year it’s to be known for traits that reflect Christ.

Lord, help me be like that.

Thankless

November 21st, 2011 by Maureen

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them…This is good and pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. I Tim 2:1, 3-4

Praying,  interceding and wanting them to be saved, I get, but thankful?  I generally pray for protection from mean, greedy, stupid, violent, selfish people.

Lord, show me how to be thankful for all people. Help them to know You. Help me to help them know You.  Adjust my attitude beyond my ability to adjust it.

Digging it

Think about what I am saying. The Lord will help you understand all these things. 2 Tim. 2:7

Some ideas take thought. It may take some time, study, questioning and prayer before some of the truths we seek to understand sink into our heads. It may take some practice and experience before they sink into our lives.

Lord, I’m digging, help me understand.

Trust issues

February 16th, 2011 by Maureen

I know the one in whom I trust, and I am sure that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until the day of his return.2 Tim 1:12

Anxiety and impatience can erode trust and cause us to forget that God is good, that He loves us, and that He really does know what we need. We absolutely, positively can trust Him with all the unresolved and the unknown in our lives. We don’t have to know all the details as long as we know the One who can handle them.

Lord, I’m waiting and hoping and trusting.
